Dependent variable – The variable measured and recorded by the experimenter in order to assess the effect of independent variables; it is hypothesized to be dependent on the  value assumed by the independent variables. The dependent variable is also dependent upon extraneous variables, hence requires control procedures.
Extraneous variable – Variables, which may potentially influence the results of a study but are not the variables whose effects are to be studied by the experimenter.
Independent variable – the variable manipulated by the experimenter for the purpose of  determining whether it influences behavior.
